To hone his skills in portraiture, Van Gogh painted friends, acquaintances, and even himself. In the latter case, the mirror was an indispensable aid. It is well known that, when living in Arles, Van Gogh bought a new mirror especially for this purpose. However, most of his portraits – 29 of the 35 he painted – were made in Paris. In this work, he has depicted himself in a suit with a grey felt hat, a bourgeois image of the Self-portrait in which Van Gogh is depicted with a straw hat and a painter''s overalls. Van Gogh used this work to experiment with the use of complementary colours and the neo-impressionist technique. The halo around the artist''s head is a striking part of this painting. The decorative cushion is digitally printed on a mix of 55% viscose and 45% cotton velvet, giving it the richness of velvet and a beautiful shine through the mix of qualities. The cushion is finished with a blue cord piping. The decorative cushion is 45x45 cm. The cushion cannot be washed in the washing machine and is not suitable for tumble drying.
